Promoting Reading. Listening and Learning at Home and at School
Reading books, listening to audiobooks and podcasts, and discussing these as a family will build literacy skills and promote a love of reading and learning. Here are some links and suggestions to help you foster a love of reading and learning in your family:
News for students:
In English - https://www.cbc.ca/kidsnews/
En français - https://ici.radio-canada.ca/jeunesse/maj, https://www.1jour1actu.com/ and numerico.cforp.ca/magazines/Quad9

Students can use their school log-ins to access the Eastern Ontario Catholic K-12 Shared Digital Collection of audiobooks and ebooks and read or listen to them on their Chromebooks, laptops, smartphones or tablets.
https://biblioottawalibrary.ca/en
In addition to borrowing books from your nearest branch, you can download ebooks and audiobooks. Ebooks are convenient because you can read them on any computer, tablet or smart phone. Audiobooks are nice to share as a family and can help pass the time while doing other tasks or traveling together by car.
Family Read-alouds
https://readaloudrevival.com/
This is a great site for finding suggestions of books to read aloud as a family. Reading aloud is a great practice at any age and can become a special time shared with family members. Parents can read to kids of all ages, kids can read to parents and older siblings/cousins can read to their younger counterparts. Audiobooks (available free from the library or for a fee using apps like Audible) are a great way to allow everyone to enjoy listening to a good book. Bedtime stories aren't just for "little kids"!
Scholastic:
Scholastic's print and digital catalogues can be handy to get ideas about what new books might appeal to your son/daughter. Once you find something of interest, you can choose whether to seek the books through one of the borrowing options described above or purchase a copy. Parents wishing to explore books from Scholastic can do so here.
Podcasts:
Podcasts are a great way to listen to content on a variety of topics. There are many high quality podcasts that are suitable for teen and family audiences. You can access Podcasts on both Android and iOS devices using the Podcast app of your choice.
These are ones that have been recommended to me for teens - some I have tried, others I have not - enjoy discovering them with your teens!
